Self Portrait

January25

We have been making self portraits, and we were divided in groups of two with one big mirror to share.

So we use a mirror and copy what we look like to make our self portraits more realistic!

We can also just draw it how we want it to be and be free with our portraits!

Nutrition Bar Graphs

December7

Today we learned to make nutrition bar graphs and this is how we did it: first we got our food diaries, then we wrote all the food we had for the five days and counted all the fruits, veggies, dairy products, cabohydrates, and protein that we wrote down. Then we put organized our data and made it all into a bar graph so we could see how much of the good food we need more of!

How Many Calories Do Children Need?

December7

Good nutrition is especially vital to children because they are growing and developing, and their bodies need calories and nutrients to do it correctly. Because most kids are very active, they need the right amount of calories to have the energy to do all the things they like to do. Depending on their activity levels, caloric requirements vary widely for growing children, from 900 each day for a 1-year-old to 3,200 a day for an active teenage boy.

9- to 13-Year-Olds

  • As kids’ bodies prepare for puberty and their activity levels increase as they get more involved in sports and school activities, their bodies need more fuel. Girls between the ages of 9 and 13 should consume 1,600 to 2,200 calories daily, and boys in this group need 1,800 to 2,600 calories every day. Like younger kids, this age group should get 10 to 30 percent of their calories each day from protein, 45 to 65 percent from carbohydrates, and 25 to 35 percent from fats.

Excursion, Thursday, May 12th

May1

Our class is very excited about our upcoming excursion to the water plant next Thursday, May 12th. Transportation will be provided by the school, but we may need one additional truck/driver. Details will follow soon, along with a permission slip.

We will be living promptly at 8:15 and should be back by morning recess (10:15).  Students will use this experience to supplement and compare what they have already learned in class about the water treatment cycle, as well as to seek answers to other inquiry questions they have.

Please email me at jamie_schwantes@fmi.com if you have any questions in the meantime.
